May is Stroke Awareness Month
by Amanda Glassburner, COTA
May is dedicated to raising awareness about strokes and the importance of recovery activities. Fine motor exercises are crucial for stroke rehabilitation, helping to rebuild strength and coordination.
Here are three effective fine motor activities for stroke recovery that are included in Therapy Busy Boxes:
1. **Isolated digit exercises**
Start with your hand palm down on a table. Try to lift your index finger up and then lower it down 5 times and then progress to each finger until you finish at the thumb. Try doing both hands at the same time.
2. **Squeezing Stress Balls**
This helps to strengthen the muscles in the hands and fingers.
3. **Buttoning and Unbuttoning**
Grab a button down shirt and practice fastening and unfastening to enhance finger precision.
